The phallus is a very ancient symbol, often depicted with wings. It was Aphrodite’s emblem. In the isle of Delos, the pillars of the temple of Dionysos were shaped like phalluses and the streets are still decorated with huge marble phalluses. In the ancient city of Athens, at the street corners and crossroads there were the “Hermes”, marble columns with the head of the god Hermes on top and male genitalia in erection, in relief, underneath. Passers-by would touch them for good luck.

In Imperial Rome, since the phallus was considered good luck, the Romans wore phallus-shaped good luck charms. In the south of Italy phallic symbols of fertility can still be seen on the fences amidst fields. In India, the depiction of a phallus has been protecting houses from thunderbolts and ill-luck for three thousand years
